An Australian Christmas

***

Once Granger finished speaking, Severus nodded his understanding. “I must admit, it was very clever and thorough of you, Ms Granger. Perhaps a bit too thorough, however,” he said.

“I know, Professor.” She sighed. “But I just wanted my parents safely out of the way in case things got...bad during the war. I didn’t think they would move to Australia, or that the Healers there wouldn’t be able to reverse the Memory Charm once it was all over. So you’ll help me?”

Severus raised an eyebrow and looked around the Hogwarts Infirmary. “I appear to be a bit restricted in what I can do at the moment, Ms Granger,” he said, tone dry.

“Oh, you’re fine, Severus,” interrupted Poppy. “I told you, the venom’s all gone. You can leave whenever you like.”

“Indeed.” Severus pulled his robes more snugly around his body. “It only took seven months,” he muttered under his breath.

Poppy snorted. “You’re welcome,” she snapped. “Anyway, there is absolutely no medical contraindication to you assisting Hermione. And I could use my infirmary back,” she muttered.

Severus sighed. Well, she’s clearly not going to be any help. “I’m not sure how much assistance I can provide by accompanying you to Australia to retrieve your parents,” he said. “Wouldn’t you be better off asking a Healer or even an Obliviator to go with you?”

“I’ve done some research and even their techniques only have a one-in-five chance of working.” Granger leaned closer. “I thought that perhaps you could create a Memory Restoration Potion--”

Intrigued despite himself, Severus pursed his lips. “It has never been done before,” he offered quietly. “You would be submitting your parents to experimentation. You’re willing to do that?”

“I would get their permission, of course,” she replied quickly. “That is if I can persuade them that my story is true and that I am their daughter.”

“And how do you propose to do that?” Severus asked.

“That’s where you come in, sir,” said a new voice, and Severus immediately stiffened. “Sorry I’m late, Hermione.”

“It’s all right, Harry.” Hermione smiled at him as he took the chair beside her, and Severus tried to quell his body’s instantaneous and automatic reaction to Potter’s presence. “You’re just in time.”

“In time for what, exactly?” asked Severus, looking back and forth between them suspiciously.

Potter smiled and something in Severus’ chest did a flip. “Well, sir, you are a bit...memorable. Hermione’s parents are familiar with you, so we thought that perhaps if Hermione took you to see them, it would shake loose some memories.”

Severus frowned. “I do not believe I’ve ever met your parents, Ms Granger.”

“No, but they’ve seen pictures of you and you, er, made quite an impression.” Granger had turned bright pink.

“Is that so?” Severus raised an eyebrow.

“And it’s also a matter of having moral support.” Granger bit her lip. “I’ve located them but I haven’t made contact yet. If I do and they don’t believe me or they decide they’d rather not have a daughter--”

“They won’t, Hermione.” Potter glanced at Severus as if hoping for an affirmative response. When Severus remained silent, he continued. “I’m sure they’ll remember you, and if they don’t, you’ve always said they are very logical people. You know things about them that no one else could. They’ll at least hear you out.”

“Who are you proposing should go on this...excursion?” asked Severus.

“Myself, Harry, Ron, and you, sir,” replied Granger. “A small group, really.”

“It’s the holidays,” Severus reminded her. “Are you really expecting me to sacrifice--”

“You have no family, Severus,” called Poppy from her spying position across the Infirmary. “In fact, you were just telling me yesterday that you were not looking forward to the holidays since you had no plans.”

Severus glared at her.

Potter coughed. “Well, I’m alone, too, sir, and since I’ve never been to Australia, I thought it’d be a nice holiday.”

“I would pay for it,” added Granger. “You’re doing me a favour so of course--”

“Even if you don’t go, I bet they wouldn’t mind having you at the Burrow for Christmas,” added Potter. “You do have alternatives.”

“As, I am sure, do you,” Severus pointed out.

Potter nodded. “Yes, sir, but Mrs Weasley already knows Ron and I won’t be there because of Hermione. She’s fine with it. Although I think she’d be happier knowing someone older was going along.”

“We’ll be sure to let her know you’re on your own for the holidays if you can’t make it,” Granger added, a sly smile curving her lips.

Severus’ eyes widened infinitesimally. Why that was almost worthy of a Slytherin! “That shall not be necessary. Naturally I’ll go. Merlin only knows what sort of trouble the three of you would get into on the other side of the world without an adult to supervise.”

Granger shot a quick and oddly triumphant look towards Potter before jumping to her feet. “Thank you, sir. You won’t regret it! And if you’ll let me know what ingredients you think you’ll need I can make sure they are available--”

Severus snorted. “I am already regretting it, Ms Granger. Now if you’ll excuse me, I suppose I’ll have to step up my physical therapy regimen to be sure I am able to withstand the rigours of the trip.” And I need to figure out what you are up to.

“Of course.” Granger started for the door, pausing as Potter lingered behind. “Harry?”

“I’ll be just a second,” Potter said.

Granger’s glance darted between Potter and Severus and she blushed. “Oh! Sure.”

Puzzled at her odd reaction, Severus began pondering what was happening and so was startled when he looked up to see Potter beside him. “Yes?”

“Just wanted to thank you, sir. This means a lot to Hermione. And to me.” Potter’s eyes glittered with some unnamed emotion.

Severus sighed. “Don’t thank me yet. I’m not sure I’ll be able to create what she needs to restore her parents’ memories.”

Potter smiled, resting his hand on Severus’ arm, sending a spark of awareness through him. “I’m sure.”

And with that, he left.

Once he was gone, Severus sighed, contemplating the lingering warmth in the spot on his arm that Potter had touched. This is a mistake, he told himself, and yet, it didn’t feel like one.

***

“Is that everything you’ll need, Professor?” Granger asked for about the third time.

“Yes, Ms Granger. As I said before, the other ingredients are best obtained on location so that they are as fresh as possible, so we’ll need to collect them once we are in Australia.” Despite his calm demeanour, Severus was nervous. He’d never been out of England, so a trip across the world was...unprecedented.

“Sorry I’m late,” announced Weasley, racing in holding a ratty scarf. “Dad only just got the Portkey done.”

“Is that it?” Granger asked, eyeing the scarf.

“Yeah.” Weasley nodded at Severus. “Hullo, Professor Snape, sir.”

A bit unnerved by how polite Weasley was, Severus nodded back. “Mr Weasley.”

“Where’s Harry?” Granger said, looking around frantically. “He can’t get there if he misses the Portkey--”

“Not easily, anyway,” Weasley agreed.

“You did inform him of what time we were departing, I trust?” Severus asked. The thought of taking the trip without Potter was oddly disturbing.

“I told him we were leaving ten minutes ago,” Granger replied, biting her lip.

“Which is why I’m here now,” announced a cheerful voice from the door. Potter, hair windswept, strode into the room. “Sorry I’m late. Ginny wanted to, um, talk.” He directed a look towards Granger, who flushed.

“Good timing, then!” she said brightly. “The Portkey’s about to engage. Are you all packed?”

“Packed?” Potter frowned. “I thought you packed for me.”

Granger’s mouth dropped open. “Harry! I am not your mother! Yes, I have some emergency clothes left over from when we were on the run, but--” She paused, crossing her arms as both Weasley and Potter grinned at her. “You are both awful!”

“Sorry,” Potter said. “I couldn’t help it. And I knew you’d be prepared.” Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a shrunken trunk. “I really did pack, Hermione. Promise.”

“Humph.” She reached for the scarf. “Well come on! It’s about to deploy.”

Weasley held one end while Granger held the other, which left a short bit for both Harry and Severus to grasp. Their fingers touched and Severus felt the now familiar spark go up his arm just as the Portkey engaged, sending them spiralling from the room.

After what was probably the longest Portkey flight Severus had ever experienced, they landed in Sydney, in the centre of the wizarding section, which was located in an area called Castlecrag. Severus had read up on the area, but nothing had prepared him for the actuality of the weather. He was immediately warm, dressed as he was for a Scottish winter, and, after making sure he was steady on his feet, he cast a Cooling Charm.

“Wow,” said Potter, looking around. “It’s pretty different, isn’t it?”

“Hermione Granger?” asked an older woman dressed in the traditional green robes of a Healer as she stepped forward.

Granger nodded. “That’s me. Are you Healer Griffin?”

“I am.” The Healer held out her hand first to Granger and then to the rest of them. “Welcome to Castlecrag Australia! If you’ll walk with me I’ll fill you in on my assessment of your parents.”

Falling into step next to the Healer, Granger soon had the woman engaged in a detailed conversation about ways to restore the elder Grangers’ memories. Weasley trailed after, looking forlorn, and bringing up the rear were Severus and Potter.

“It’s going to be strange celebrating a warm Christmas,” Potter remarked as they strolled. “I may have to go out and make a sand man instead of a snowman.”

Severus snorted. “What are you, twelve?”

“Just making up for lost time.” Potter grinned, bumping shoulders with Severus. “And hey, I happen to know that you’ve never been to the ocean either. We should go together. Make it a...date.”

Only forward momentum allowed Severus to continue walking. “A...date?” he choked out. He cleared his throat. “You should be careful about the things you say, Potter. People may take such remarks seriously.”

Potter was blushing but he met Severus’ gaze squarely. “Good, because I am being serious,” he said. “Neither of us seem to have anyone to cuddle up under the mistletoe with at the moment and it is almost Christmas.” He pursed his lips. “Do Australians even have mistletoe?”

“I have no idea,” Severus said, trying to keep up with Potter’s jumbled thoughts. “Are you actually suggesting that we should, ‘cuddle up’ as you put it, together?” Severus deadpanned. “Under Australian mistletoe?”

“If they have it, yes. That sounds brilliant to me, in fact.” To Severus’ shock, Potter linked their arms. “I was hoping you’d see it my way.”

“I did not say--” Severus gasped as Potter leaned up and kissed him lightly on the mouth. “Why did you do that?”

Potter smiled. “To see if you’d mind. It doesn’t look like you minded at all.”

“Well you hardly gave me a chance to react,” Severus grumbled.

“All right.” Stepping directly in front of him, Potter clasped both Severus’ hands. “Shall we try that again?”

As Potter stepped close to Severus’ body, Severus released his hands, sliding his arms around Potter’s waist even as Potter tilted his head back. “Properly this time,” he murmured, before dipping his head and capturing Potter’s mouth in a heated snog.

It appeared Severus had not forgotten how to kiss, if Potter’s moans and the way he arched into Severus were any sign. When Severus finally drew back they were both panting and Potter looked gratifyingly dazed. “Wow.”

Severus smirked. “Still interested in cuddling up under mistletoe?”

“Definitely.” Potter nodded. “And Merlin, I really hope they have it here,” he breathed. “Although I’m sure whatever shrubs they have will do--”

“Hey, are you two coming or what?” Weasley, looking entirely unsurprised that they were touching, was standing waiting for them at the end of the street. “I was beginning to think you two got lost.”

In each other, yes. Severus tried to move back but Potter clung and, unwilling to publicly struggle, Severus relaxed in his arms. “Where is Miss Granger?” he asked, fighting his embarrassment.

“She and the Healer went on ahead,” Weasley said. His eyes flickered over them but he didn’t seem bothered. “I promised I’d wait behind so you’d know which direction they went.” He crossed his arms. “So if you two are done--?”

“Yeah, yeah, keep your knickers on,” Potter said, gently disengaging before sliding his hand down Severus’ arm and linking their fingers. “We’re coming. Just working out our holiday plans.”

“Yes, well, it’s about time,” Weasley muttered as Potter dragged Severus past him. And from the look in his eyes, Severus wasn’t sure Weasley was talking about their loitering behind.

Potter grinned. “Oi, worry about your own plans, mate,” he teased.

As they walked, Potter and Weasley chatted back and forth. Severus tried to reclaim his fingers but Potter just tightened his, so, obscurely pleased, Severus again relaxed.

They caught up with Granger and Healer Griffin at the hotel. “There you are!” Granger said. Her eyes widened at Severus’ and Potter’s linked hands, however. “Well, looks like some things have been sorted.”

Severus cleared his throat while Potter, blushing, nodded. “You could say that.”

“That’s wonderful.” Granger exhaled. “We’ve one more thing to sort out now.”

“Oh?” Severus said.

“Yes. Healer Griffin has located my parents’ workplace and, well, I made a dental appointment.” She smiled weakly. “We see them in an hour.”

“Lovely,” Severus said, tone dry. “I’ve an hour to collect my fresh ingredients and create a new, never before created potion?”

“Good thing you’re brilliant, then, isn’t it?” Potter murmured.

“Actually, I may be able to help,” offered Healer Griffin, smiling up at Severus. “My potions cupboard is quite well stocked and I’ve a working laboratory.”

Severus inclined his head. “That may be acceptable. Lead the way and I’ll see--”

We’ll see,” Potter chimed in, his hand tightening on Severus’.

Severus stared at him.

“What?” Potter said quietly. “I learned Potions from the best.” He smiled. “The Half-Blood Prince.”

Healer Griffin blinked at both of them, then stepped back. “Of course. This way, gentlemen.”

Severus couldn’t bring himself to mind Potter’s possessiveness. He wasn’t sure he could bear to see anyone flirt with Potter either just then.

The Healer’s cupboard was well stocked, and when Severus saw her lab, he pulled out his ingredients and put together the Memory Restoration Potion right there, incorporating her ingredients and using all he knew of potions theory. To his surprise, Potter was a big help and they decanted several phials of the silvery liquid, which, oddly, looked like Pensieve memories.

Once they were done, Severus and Potter returned to the others, Severus carrying what he hoped would be the cure.

“Just in time,” said Granger, raising her head from where it had been resting on Weasley’s shoulder. “We’ve ten minutes to get there.”

Pocketing the phials he’d prepared, Severus nodded. “And then what?”

“And then we hope they remember me,” Granger whispered.

***

Unfortunately, they didn’t, although Granger’s mother did look at Granger for a long moment at check in. “I’m sorry, dear,” she said as Granger stared back hungrily. “You just looked a bit familiar for a moment. Here, have a seat all of you, we’ll be with you in a moment. We’re usually a lot busier at this time of year, but somehow everyone seems to be cancelling their appointments today or we couldn’t have fit you in.”

As Granger senior moved away, Severus pursed his lips. The waiting room was strangely empty. He sent an inquiring look Granger’s way.

“What?” she asked, defensive. “It’s Christmas Eve. The Muggles didn’t even have to be persuaded to stay away. Much.”

Potter, still virtually glued to Severus’ side, chuckled. “It’s all right, Hermione. We understand.”

“We really do,” Weasley chimed in from his position by the windows. “They’re your parents, you want them back.”

Granger nodded mutely, reaching for Weasley. “I do,” she sighed as he drew her close. “Oh, Ron, I so do.”

“Are you ready, then?” asked a tall man at the door leading towards the examination rooms. “Which of you is Hermione?” He smiled. “Such a pretty name--”

Granger bit her lip. “That’s me. I’m Hermione.”

“This way, dear.” Mr Granger smiled. “Are you nervous?”

“A bit.” Granger smiled tremulously.

“One of your friends could come with you--”

Severus grasped the wand in his pocket. Surely a small Imperius wouldn’t do too much damage--”

Mr Granger’s features softened. “I’ll tell you what. Your friends can come with you if you like. It’s a bit irregular, but it’s Christmas, so why not?”

“Thank you,” Granger said, clinging to Weasley’s hand as she moved forward. “I...appreciate that.”

Severus relaxed his grip on his wand. It was probably for the best that he hadn’t had to go mucking about in their minds. It was going to be difficult enough to restore them as it was.

The examination room was very clean, very bright, and as Granger settled into the chair, Weasley still holding her hand, Severus worked his way around to the instruments, looking them over, trying to decide on the best way to slip the elder Grangers the potion...

“Would you all like some tea?” Mrs Granger asked, popping her head in. She was carrying several Styrofoam cups on a tray. “I know I could do with a cuppa. It’s been a long day.”

Perfect. Severus nodded, taking one. “That would be...acceptable.”

Mrs Granger handed one to Potter and after she set the tray down, she blinked at him thoughtfully. “Have we met before?” she asked. “You look so very familiar--”

“Are you originally from England?” Severus asked. “Perhaps it was there--”

She nodded. “Yes, that could be it. My husband and I relocated to Australia about six months ago. It was on a whim, really, but there was nothing keeping us in England, and we do enjoy it here, especially the weather.”

Behind them, Granger sucked in a harsh breath. “Did I hurt you, dear?” asked Mr Granger. “I haven’t even started yet. Do you need some gas?”

“No,” gulped Granger.

“Tea is just the thing, I think,” Severus said, palming the potion and slipping some into two cups. “We should all break for tea.” Handing Mr and Mrs Granger the doctored cups, he said, “A toast!”

“A toast?” Mrs Granger seemed confused. “What should we toast?”

Severus’ mind went blank, but Potter picked up the slack. “To a merry Christmas!” he said, raising his cup.

They all drank, Mr Granger smiling at his wife. “This is very good tea, dear. Very goo--” Soundlessly, he collapsed, followed immediately by his wife.

“Dad! Mum!” Granger screamed, leaping out of the chair and crouching down beside them. “Is this supposed to happen?” she cried, looking up at Severus.

“It’s difficult to know,” Severus said, leaning down and checking their pulses. “But if their memories are being rewritten I should think unconsciousness would be necessary.”

“Right, well, let’s get them up off the floor at least,” suggested Weasley, hands resting on Granger’s shoulders.

“Good idea,” said Harry, and so they levitated the Grangers up and into two of the dental chairs and arranged them so they looked comfortable.

While Granger hovered anxiously, Severus walked over to the windows, staring at the water view. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” Potter whispered behind him. “We should come back sometime on holiday.”

“We?” Severus asked, meeting Potter’s reflected gaze in the glass.

“Absolutely.” Potter moved closer until he was leaning against Severus. “You don’t think I’m letting you go now, do you?”

Severus smirked. “Indeed? And why not?”

“Two words,” said Potter, tone low. “Naked sandmen.”

“Naked?” Severus raised one eyebrow. “I don’t recall you saying anything before about nakedness.”

“Oh, I think nakedness is clearly called for.” Potter’s face moved in. “Most definitely.”

Their lips had just touched when someone cleared their throat. “I say, should you be doing that in here?” Mr Granger, sitting up, was blinking at them. As he looked around, he caught sight of Granger and his eyes widened. “Hermione! Oh my goodness!”

As Severus watched, Granger was reunited with her confused but enthusiastic parents, and when all the hugging and crying was over - Severus made sure to stay far away as that was happening - they had been invited to stay with the Grangers for Christmas. “We just have to throw something on the barbie as they say around here and of course, there’s wine.”

“Sounds brilliant to me,” said Weasley.

Mrs Granger, her arm around her daughter, raised an eyebrow. “It certainly does. And while I cook you can help me, young man. That way you can tell me all about how you feel about our Hermione.”

Severus hid a smirk. Weasley’s holiday was suddenly looking quite interesting.

With the Grangers’ memories restored, they could use magic and so it took only moments before they were stepping into a cheerful house in downtown Castlecrag.

Upon stepping inside, Severus looked around, noticing one thing immediately. Potter evidently noticed it as well. “Looks like Australians like mistletoe, too,” he purred in Severus’ ear. “Merry Christmas to us.”

Severus smiled. It certainly looked as if it was going to be.

Oh very nice! I love how you tie up the canon loose end with Hermione retrieving her parents, and think it's brilliant that it took a special potion to do it! Lovely fic!

Very cute! I love interfering busybody Poppy, the way she keep interjecting pushy comments :D Snape's line, "Are you actually suggesting that we should, ‘cuddle up’ as you put it, together?...Under Australian mistletoe?" made me snicker, I could just hear him saying it.

I love the gentle Severus/Poppy jibes, that Severus thinks Hermione's almost as cunning as a Slytherin, Harry & Severus's first heated snog, naked sandmen, &, of course the mistletoe!
