A/N: This is not a happy fic, as the holidays are very bad for me. I hope this fits what you wanted. Thank You A for the wonderful beta job and help with the ending.

Harry returned home to the wizarding flat he had once shared with Draco, his clothes and body showing signs of battle. Upon entering the darkened flat, he walked over to the fireplace and looked at the brown brittle holly that hung around the fireplace mantel. Its leaves and berries were withered, brown, and dry, yet Harry couldn’t bring himself to take it down. It was the last piece of Christmas decoration he had put up last year to surprise Draco.

Neither Harry nor Draco had many fond memories of Yule, and Draco had even less. At least Harry had the happy memories which came from being involved with the Weasley’s. Draco’s sad history fueled Harry’s determination to make their first Yule together special.

The tree had been decorated, with fairies and Clabberts sleeping in the branches amidst the Muggle decorations. An enchanted snowfall had fallen softly from the ceiling. The only thing left for them to do had been to light the magical star at the top by holding their wands and intertwining their fingers. Then they had planned to exchange one special gift at midnight.

Draco never came home to light the star. Draco’s godfather instead had come to tell Harry that one of Umbridge’s Shadow Members had murdered him. Severus had brought Harry a small red and green box tied with a silver- and gold-entwined ribbon. In the box was Draco’s Christmas present to Harry: A gold and silver band with a gold lion’s head starting the band, the lion’s body morphing into a silver snake across the band, and ending the snake’s head on the opposite end of the band.

Harry could still hear Severus’ words, as his former Potions Master and friend had fought to hold back the tears. “H-He was going to ask you to marry him.”

~~

The fairies had long since evaporated, for fairies cannot bear pain, and the Clabberts had run away. The tree stood bare and empty. Harry looked at the red and green box in his hand, its colours faded from the countless drops of pain and sorrow that fell from upon its surface. The silver and gold ribbon had frayed from being held throughout the many, sleepless nights that Harry had cried himself to sleep. The ring still lay nestled in the red and green velvet. Harry took the ring from the box, and placing the empty box on the mantel, he picked up a vial of smoky-gray potion—the only gift he had wanted from Severus.

Looking out the window at the trees and decorations in the other wizarding flats, his eyes settled on a particular young wizarding couple having a row. Harry could tell that angry hurtful words were being exchanged. Both wizards were crying and wands were drawn.

Harry looked at the small faded box on the mantel and the ring in his hand and sighed heavily, wiping tears away. Harry broke the seal on the vial, and looking back across the courtyard, whispered in a voice heavy with tears “Do they know its Christmas time at all?”

Slipping the ring onto his finger, Harry sobbed, “Happy Yule, Love. I killed them. Umbridge and her Shadow Members. I killed them all.”

Bringing the vial to his lips, Harry drank the potion, and as he stumbled into the mantle falling to the floor, amid the soft crackling of dried holly, said “Yes, I’ll marry you D-Drac...”

The heavy thud of his body hitting floor and the crunch of dead holly broke the serene silence of this room of death and sorrow. And, oblivious to the tragedy within the room, snow continued falling outside the window.

light the magical star at the top by holding their wands and intertwining their fingers. That was a beautiful image - heartbreaking that they never got to do this.
Very, very sad. Beautiful last line.
