Regulus passed a hand in his hair, bit his lips, sighed and finally, spoke in a steady voice that didn’t sound like him.
“I will be dead soon, Severus.”
“I know.”
“...”
“Don’t look at me with such surprise. I’m a perceptive man.”
After a pause, Regulus asked : “Did he tell you anything?”
Severus sighed.
“No. No, not really.” he replied cautiously. “But I could see he was a bit... preoccupated by your commitments. Or lack thereof. You have been careless...”
“I know. I have my reasons, believe it or not.” There was something that sounded much like regret in Regulus’ voice.
Severus, who was standing up and staring in the vague with his back to the table, stoic, made a sound of impatience, then turned around to face Regulus, who sat his elbows on the table and his head in his hands, massaging his temples. “Alright.” replied Severus softly.
Regulus looked up at him. They gazed at each other for what seemed like ages, reveling in their contemplation of each other, wanting this moment to last.
Regulus got up. He looked handsome despite his features marked by exhaustion - puffy eyes, pasty skin. He approached the older man, who made no move but eyed him expectantly.
“I’m glad to be here for my last Christmas, Severus.” he whispered, a sad smile upon his lips.
Severus leaned in to kiss him - as if to shut him up gently, not to hear about it, to forget about death that was coming upon them both, sooner or later, because they had made dangerous choices.
