Summary: Neville says they need to talk, but it’s nothing like Draco was afraid it was.

Draco knew something was wrong as soon as Neville walked through the door of their flat. He just had that look on his face, the one that Draco knew from experience meant that Neville was about to say something that neither of them wanted to hear.

“Can we talk?” Neville asked once he’d hung up his cloak. He was standing awkwardly just inside the kitchen, where Draco had been in the middle of preparing dinner.

Draco nodded, dread an uncomfortable lump in his gut, and led the way over to the living room. He sat in the wingback chair, leaving Neville alone on the couch, because it made him feel a little in control when his worry was starting to take over. Neville took a deep breath and Draco braced himself for the worst.

“Gran wants you to come for Christmas dinner.”

That… was not anything like Draco had been expecting. He felt the anxiety leave his body in a rush, leaving him almost limp with relief. He staggered to his feet and made it the few feet between them before collapsing half in Neville’s lap.

And then he started laughing hysterically. It felt like the only proper response under the circumstances.

“You scared the shit out of me,” he said once he managed to stop laughing and caught his breath. Well, he was still laughing a little, but it wasn’t quite so hysterical anymore. “I thought you had something bad to tell me.”

Neville was still looking at him a little wide eyed, like he wasn’t sure what to do about the laughing mess of a boyfriend in his lap, but then he frowned. “I just said my gran wants you to come around for dinner, what could be worse than that?”

“I thought you were going to break up with me or something,” Draco said, waving his hand vaguely. But asking someone to dinner with the family, especially for Christmas, was just about the opposite of a breakup, so he was feeling much better about it. “That you’d finally gotten tired of being with me.”

“You thought I was going to break up with you?” Neville was really looking at him strangely now, like he had no idea that he was far too good for Draco. Draco thought he probably didn’t, but that naivette was part of his charm. “That’s just… that’s absolutely ridiculous. There’s no way I’d get tired of you, Draco. Ever.”

Draco smiled, feeling incredibly fond of his boyfriend, then suddenly froze. “Wait, when did you talk to your gran?” he asked, Neville’s words from earlier finally clicking in his mind. “And why is me being invited to dinner with your gran the worst thing?”

Neville took one look at Draco’s once more anxious face and it was his turn to burst into laughter. He was bent over Draco’s shoulder, arms around his waist, making them both shake with how hard he was laughing. Draco tried to pull back so he could get Neville to look at him.

“Neville! Answer me! Why is that the worst thing?”

Neville just kept laughing.
